The Union State (officially the Union State of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan; Russian: Союзное государство) is a federal socialist state established in 2000 following the restoration of communist rule in Russia after the 1996 Russian Presidential election. It was created as a successor to the Soviet Union and united several former Soviet republics under a single political, economic, and military framework.
The Union State is dominated by the Communist Party of the Union State (CPUS), which controls the central government and maintained significant influence over member republics. While officially organized as a federation of sovereign socialist republics, most political power was concentrated in Moscow.
The establishment of the Union State marked the beginning of a renewed geopolitical rivalry between the socialist bloc and Western countries, commonly known as the Second Cold War.

Between 1997 and 2000, several states entered political unions with Russia:
- Belarus joined through the 1997 Union State Treaty.
- Georgia entered after negotiations between Eduard Shevardnadze and Moscow.
- Ukraine joined after the political crisis following the assassination of [[Leonid
