Following the victory of [[Gennady Zyuganov]] and the [[Communist Party of the Russian Federal Socialist Republic]] in the [[1996 Russian presidential election]], the Russian government began reversing many of the reforms introduced under [[Boris Yeltsin]].

The new government restored state control over strategic industries, strengthened the security services, and began rebuilding relations with former Soviet republics.
