Editing 1996 Russian Presidential election

The '''1996 Russian presidential election '''was held on 16 June 1996 (first round) and 3 July 1996 (second round) to elect the [[President of the Russian Federation]]. The election resulted in a landslide victory for [[Communist Party of the Russian Federation|Communist Party]] candidate [[Gennady Zyuganov]], who defeated incumbent President [[Boris Yeltsin]] with 71% of the vote in the second round.

The election marked the end of Yeltsin's presidency and the beginning of a [[communist restoration in Russia]]. Following Yeltsin's unsuccessful attempt to remain in power through a self-coup after the election, he was arrested, and Zyuganov assumed office as President on 17 July 1996. These events paved the way for the dissolution of the [[Russian Federation]] and the establishment of the [[Russian Federal Socialist Republic]] (RFSR).

Background

By 1996, President [[Boris Yeltsin|Boris Yeltsin's]] popularity had collapsed following years of [[Russian economic xollapse|economic turmoil]] caused by rapid [[market reforms]], [[privatization]], [[hyperinflation in Russia|high inflation]], and declining living standards. Organized crime expanded rapidly while a small group of oligarchs accumulated significant wealth and influence.

The opposition, led by the [[Communist Party of the Russian Federation]] (CPRF) under Gennady Zyuganov, campaigned on restoring state control over the economy, rebuilding Russian power, combating corruption, and reversing many of Yeltsin's reforms.

During the campaign, Yeltsin's effort was weakened after three American political consultants hired to advise his campaign [[Russo-American Flight Disaster|died in a plane crash before arriving in Russia]]. The campaign also faced financial restrictions after the Supreme Court ruled against its use of shell companies to circumvent campaign spending limits.

Campaign

Zyuganov focused on criticizing the economic collapse of the early 1990s, promising to restore stability, rebuild industry, and strengthen Russia's international position.

Yeltsin attempted to portray a Communist victory as a return to dictatorship but struggled with limited campaign resources, declining public confidence, and internal divisions among his supporters. His attacks on Alexander Lebed after the first round alienated many anti-communist voters whose support he needed for the runoff.

Although Yeltsin narrowly advanced to the runoff after a dispute with Alexander Lebed over vote counting, his political standing was severely damaged.

Zyuganov won overwhelming victories throughout Russia's industrial regions while also making gains in traditionally pro-government areas.

Aftermath

Two days after the official results were announced, President [[Boris Yeltsin|Yeltsin]] attempted to dissolve the [[State Duma]] and invalidate the election, alleging widespread [[election fraud|fraud]]. His actions received little support from the armed forces.

Large portions of the Russian military declared their loyalty to President-elect Zyuganov. Security forces loyal to Yeltsin briefly resisted before being overwhelmed.

On 17 July 1996, Yeltsin was arrested after troops stormed the Kremlin. Zyuganov was sworn in as President the same day.

The new government rapidly banned several liberal political parties, began [[Renationalization|nationalizing key industries]], restored many [[Resovietization|Soviet-era institutions]], and reorganized Russia as the [[Russian Federal Socialist Republic]]. These reforms eventually culminated in the formation of the [[Union State]] in 2000, widely regarded as the successor to the [[Soviet Union]].
