The '''Union State''' (officially the '''Union State of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan'''; [[Russian language|Russian]]: ''Союзное государство'') is a federal socialist state established in [[2000]] following the restoration of communist rule in [[Russia]] after the [[1996 Russian presidential election]]. It was created as a successor to the [[Soviet Union]] and united several former Soviet republics under a single political, economic, and military framework.

The Union State is dominated by the [[Communist Party of the Union State (CPUS)]], which controls the central government and maintained significant influence over member republics. While officially organized as a federation of sovereign socialist republics, most political power was concentrated in [[Moscow]].

The establishment of the Union State marked the beginning of a renewed geopolitical rivalry between the socialist bloc and Western countries, commonly known as the [[Second Cold War]].

Following the victory of [[Gennady Zyuganov]] and the [[Communist Party of the Russian Federal Socialist Republic]] in the [[1996 Russian presidential election]], the Russian government began reversing many of the reforms introduced under [[Boris Yeltsin]].

The new government restored state control over strategic industries, strengthened the security services, and began rebuilding relations with former Soviet republics.

Between [[1997]] and [[2000]], several states entered political unions with Russia:
